Our Curriculum Approach

We pride ourselves in the fact that our curriculum is designed for the children in our community both locally and globally. We place particular emphasis on the basic skills of English and Mathematics and teach these within a rich, broad and exciting curriculum. We have a wide range of extra-curricular activities and our children are happy and enjoy learning together.

Early Years Foundation Stage

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. This is a statutory requirement for all schools. Our team of Foundation practitioners use on going assessment and observations of the children to develop a flexible curriculum. The curriculum is based on the children’s interests. This is ensures that they are enthusiastic and motivated about their learning. Our foundation stage children have continuous access to both inside and outside. We provided a carefully planned play based curriculum which also maximises opportunities for children to develop their own lines of enquiry.

Phonics and reading are taught through Read, Write Inc programme, which is a systematic synthetic phonics programme.  This is a recognised scheme that ensures that all children become confident, independent and enthusiastic readers.

Curriculum for Years 1 - 6

We pride ourselves on the curriculum that we provide for the learners in our school. We have worked hard to ensure that our curriculum reflects the world that we live in. We make reference to the National Curriculum which has supported our curriculum development.  The three key elements to our topic curriculum are:

Local identity: This involves learning about our immediate surroundings, Cornwall and the United Kingdom. It is important that children are develop a sense of community, a cultural identity and how where they live is similar or different to other locations.

Environmental: This focuses on a variety of environmental issues which encourage the children to learn about their impact on their world and how they can make a positive change.

Global: This is an important part of our curriculum. The children have an opportunity to study different countries and continents around the world. This helps them to develop their global identity and ensures that they develop understanding, respect and tolerance for different cultures, their traditions and views.

 Our topic curriculum is taught in subject blocks. It has clear progression that ensures that the children develop skills, understanding and knowledge.This means that the children will focus on one subject area for a period of time rather than have 1 lesson a week e.g. science maybe taught over a series of ten consecutive lessons. This ensure that there is continuity in the learning for the children, it enables the teachers to use day to day assessment to plan for personalised learning and ensure that there is a pace to the children’s learning.

We ensure that our curriculum is enriched by a variety of motivators, this includes trips, visits and visits in school by experts. Our extensive outdoor areas means that the delivery of the curriculum is not restricted to inside. The staff make use of this outdoor space to enrich all aspects of the curriculum.

Pupil Voice

We have a strong, active School Council who meet on a regular basis. All the councillors have been elected by their peers and they participate in the life of the Academy. Councillors from all classes across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 are involved in trying to improve our amazing school.
The School Council are the brains behind charity fundraising days at school (e.g. Comic Relief and Children in Need) which they plan, organise and run. The children have also been involved in the review of the curriculum. They discuss issues that they feel are important and input into the school development plan.
After very successful fundraising for the school’s new Sensory Room, the School Council are currently involved in a bid to try and win £500 funding from ‘Think Big 2020’ for a special project to further improve our school.

They have achieved the Gold Learner Participation Award for School Councils.  This is in recognition of the strong pupil voice at Falmouth Primary Academy.

The school council are currently working with Surfers Against Sewage, as the school is working towards their Plastic Free School Award.  They are also working with the Woodland Trust on their Green Tree Award.

In addition to our school council, we also have well-being champions who were selected by their peers, they ensure that pupils' well-being is well looked after.

We also have a team of science ambassadors who support with developing science across the school as well as sharing exciting scientific facts with their peers.
